Caleb Neilson

Growth, Leadership, and Farming Excellence
Caleb Neilson's progression to farm manager at Dawson Downs is an example of growth, ambition and commitment to animals, leadership, and farming excellence.
Caleb's connection to farming runs deep. Born in Invercargill, he moved to Cromwell at the age of seven, before spending his childhood in Palmerston just north of Dunedin. He grew up on a high-country farm, where sheep and beef were the mainstay and attended East Otago High School. He credits his father with teaching him stockmanship and says he wasn’t allowed dogs until his dad was confident that he could read stock accurately.
His career began at Pāmu farm, Thornicroft, in November 2013 where, as a school leaver with two dogs, he worked as a Shepherd General for two years. His hard work and dedication saw him promoted to Senior Shepherd, and then to Stock Manager. His next challenge was managing a deer farm at Cape Foulwind, this was a turning point for Caleb and a role that pushed him out of his comfort zone and taught him much about himself.
He credits his old manager, Lindsay Cunningham at Thornicroft, for teaching him valuable lessons in keeping a clear head and looking for solutions rather than problems. His mantra is every mistake is a learning opportunity. Leadership for Caleb means inspiring others to think for themselves and find solutions.
Caleb's values are deeply rooted in teamwork and collaboration. He believes that without people, nothing can be achieved. Working shoulder-to-shoulder with other managers like Matt Hamilton at Landsdown Dairy Unit and Neil Casey from Dunns Dairy Unit and ensuring good dairy beef is crucial to achieving common goals.
Caleb's pride comes from working his way up the ladder. His first manager role was a significant milestone, and he still feels honoured that someone recognised his potential and respected his work enough to encourage him to apply for the role. He aims to leave his mark on Dawson Downs by improving stock numbers and product quality.
Looking ahead, Caleb hopes to take on more hectares, and lead a bigger team in the future.
For Caleb, farming excellence means doing the best job possible with the tools and knowledge available. He believes in keeping accurate records and making informed decisions. His mantra is to do the basics well and strive for continuous improvement.
Caleb Neilson's story is a testament to progression at Pāmu. Caleb has made the most of opportunities, is dedicated to his animals and his team. His journey is a blend of personal growth, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
