Harvey Mark

Ngāti Hauā

Pāmu Farm Apprentice

Active. Kind. Respectful.

Growing up in the small rural community of Matiere, just out of Taumarunui, Harvey Mark always knew he was destined for life on the land. A proud affiliate of Ngāti Hauā, Harvey’s connection to whenua runs deep — and now, as a Pāmu apprentice, he’s turning his passion for the outdoors into a purpose-driven farming career.

After a taste of sheep and beef work on a local farm, Harvey was hooked. He says:

“I enjoy being out on the farm, doing outdoor activities. I want to learn more about the animals and everything else you can do on a farm.”

A Taumarunui High School graduate with dirt under his boots

Harvey came to Pāmu with hands-on experience and a hunger to learn more. Guided by the mentorship of industry role model Chris Brears, he joined the Pāmu apprenticeship programme to build his knowledge and skill base across all aspects of station life, from stock handling and fencing to water systems and shearing.

Harvey is part of Pāmu’s two-year Apprenticeship Scheme, which combines hands-on experience in both dairy and livestock farming with academic learning. Apprentices work towards Level 3 and 4 NZ Certificates in Agriculture through Primary ITO, while also gaining essential life skills. The scheme not only imparts practical farming skills but also focuses on personal development, ensuring apprentices are well-equipped for independent living and future leadership roles in agriculture. He shares:

“I’m hoping to learn a lot about the animals, and to get better at shearing and fencing — and also learn more about water lines,”

Life goals, four legs at a time

In five years, Harvey hopes to be on a station with a full team of working dogs, chasing his dream of farm management. He’s especially interested in livestock but is open to specialising further as he grows.

“One day, I’d love to manage a farm — and I want to use everything I learn at Pāmu to help me get there.”
