Ryan Finlay

These are the three words Ryan Finlay uses to describe himself, which ring true in everything he does on-farm.

Growing up in the heart of the Manawatū, Ryan’s passion for farming was sparked early. He says: 

While at Palmerston North Boys’ High School, Ryan got hands-on through a Primary ITO farming programme in Years 12 and 13. That experience confirmed what he already suspected: agriculture was where he belonged.

With encouragement from his family and teachers, Ryan joined Pāmu’s apprenticeship programme, motivated by a desire to learn, grow, and one day run his own farm. “My parents were a big influence. They pushed me to do my best in farming and backed me all the way.” 

For Ryan, the best part of farm life is simple: 

What excites him most about his apprenticeship is the chance to sharpen his skills, particularly shearing, and build the knowledge he needs to succeed in a dry stock or cropping system.

His dream is to become a great farmer, not just for himself, but for the future of the industry. “I want to take what I’ve learned and pass it forward to the next generation.” He shares: 

Ryan’s interests outside of farming are just as rugged and hands-on. When he’s not on the job, you’ll find him out hunting, trapping possums, fly fishing, or tearing up a trail on his quad. He’s also got a knack for archery... a hidden talent not many know about.

Since starting with Pāmu, Ryan has been impressed by the culture. “Everyone here is friendly and offers help when you need it. I felt welcomed right from day one,” he says.
