Archie Davidson

Pāmu Farm Apprentice

From childhood on dairy farms to chasing a hill country dream

For Archie Davidson, farming isn't just a career choice; it's in his blood. Growing up on dairy farms across both the North and South Islands, Archie developed an early passion for the land, the animals, and the tangible satisfaction of seeing hard work make a real difference. After spending his later years in the Manawatū and Rangitikei regions, he knew he wanted to return to farming, and that's what brought him to the apprenticeship scheme of Pāmu.

Now embarking on his agricultural career through the apprenticeship program of Pāmu, Archie is gaining hands-on experience and building the skills that will carry him toward his ultimate goal: a management role in big hill country.

"I've always been passionate about farming, the land and seeing the work you do make a difference."

Why Pāmu?

When Archie was researching apprenticeship opportunities, the approach of Pāmu stood out immediately. The range of opportunities on offer and the chance to experience both dairy and drystock farming before committing to a specific pathway were exactly what he was looking for.

"I thought it was quite cool that you can get a taste of both pathways both dairy and drystock before making the big decision of what you actually want to do."

What excites him most about working at Pāmu is waking up knowing that all the equipment is well-serviced and that he is working in a safe and supportive environment. From his first day, he felt welcomed by a team that was inviting and supportive, setting the tone for his journey ahead.

Building the foundation

Archie came to Pāmu with some farming experience already under his belt, having worked as a casual farmhand on his uncle's property during school holidays and weekends while attending Whanganui Collegiate School. His uncle remains one of his role models in the industry, and his family has been the biggest influence on his decision to pursue farming as a career.

Now, through the apprenticeship, Archie is focused on deepening his knowledge and expanding his skill set. He is particularly keen to learn more about the animals he works with, and he is looking forward to gaining expertise in fencing and shearing. His goal is to complete his Level 3-4 qualifications in agriculture while picking up a wide range of practical skills along the way.

Surrounded by ambition

One of the things Archie values most about the Pāmu apprenticeship is being surrounded by like-minded people who all want to do well and thrive in the sector. This environment of shared ambition and mutual support aligns perfectly with his own career goals.

In five years, Archie sees himself in a senior shepherd or stock management role, building toward his ultimate dream: a management position on big hill country. He's particularly interested in livestock and finishing farms, and he's committed to taking all the knowledge and skills he gains through the apprenticeship and giving back to the sector.

Life beyond the farm

Outside of work, Archie's passion extends to the outdoors in another form — pig hunting. He's also passionate about dogs, both pig dogs and working dogs, which ties naturally into his farming life. If he had to describe himself in three words, he'd choose: honest, active, and respectful.

What does he love most about working outdoors? Simply being outside, working with the land and animals —  the fundamentals that drew him to farming in the first place.

The journey ahead

Archie Davidson's story is just beginning, but his foundation is strong: a childhood immersed in farming, a supportive family, hands-on experience, and a clear vision for where he wants to go. With the comprehensive apprenticeship program of Pāmu providing the training, support, and opportunities he needs, Archie is well on his way to achieving his hill country management dream and making his own mark on New Zealand's agricultural sector.

"I plan to take all the knowledge and skills I gain from the Pāmu apprenticeship and give back to the sector."
