John Isaacs

Growing New Roots in Central North Island Forestry
As the Central North Island Forester for Pāmu, John Isaacs is embracing a steep learning curve with enthusiasm. His days are spent traversing farms across the CNI Region, planning for the crucial planting season that runs from June through October, and building relationships with farm staff who have welcomed him warmly into his new role.
John's journey to Pāmu came through connections he would made in his previous position, where he was involved in native tree planting. When Pāmu staff he knew encouraged him to apply, he saw an opportunity not just for a new job, but for personal growth and re-training in an entirely new environment.
"My desire to learn more about this new role and to assimilate myself into the 'Forestry' environment as quickly as possible—that's what gets me out of bed in the morning."
The transition hasn't been without its challenges. As someone from an "older generation," John admits he sometimes struggles with the computer systems and data management that modern forestry demands. But his approach to these challenges reveals much about his character—he's conscious of not overburdening busy colleagues, yet appreciative of the support available when he needs it.
What John loves most about his work is clear: the opportunity to learn new skills, the time spent outdoors (weather permitting), and the relationships he's building along the way. These priorities align perfectly with the Pāmu value he identifies with most strongly—shoulder-to-shoulder.
"Working as a team, communicating all the time so everyone knows what is happening," he explains. "Being involved in team conversations is crucial to create that bonding that is needed for everyone to work well together."
"Farming excellence means being able to do your job at the best of your ability no matter how difficult it can be at times. Treating work mates and colleagues with respect and kindness and communicate well."
For John, excellence isn't about perfection. Iit's about effort, respect, and communication. Though he's still in the early days of his Pāmu journey, he's already finding reward in being part of a large team of people all striving to do their best.
Looking ahead five years, John's aspirations are both humble and ambitious: more experience under his belt and the ability to contribute meaningfully to a strong forestry team of dedicated professionals. It's a vision that speaks to someone who understands that growth takes time, and that the best teams are built one relationship, one planting season, and one learning opportunity at a time.
