Biodiversity

Pāmu is committed to protecting and enhancing biodiversity across its operations through best-practice farming and practical, on-the-ground actions. This work delivers many co-benefits, including climate resilience, emissions reduction, improved soil health, freshwater quality, and enhanced animal welfare.
Protecting ecosystems, enhancing native species, and reducing threats is our focus. By prioritising biodiversity and working collaboratively with government and sector partners, we are positioning ourselves to create value for nature and engage in emerging market opportunities.
Some of our activities include:
- Over 10,000 hectares of ecologically significant land through covenants with the Queen Elizabeth National Trust (QEII), ensuring these areas remain permanently protected
- Utilising innovative tools such as eDNA sampling to detect species presence and inform management decisions
- A partnership with the collaborative conservation organisation Kiwi Coast to support predator control in Northland
- Hosting an annual community planting day on Eyrewell dairy farm in Canterbury to enhance native skink habitat
- Leading a four-year research project, co-funded by MPI’s Sustainable Food and Fibre Futures (SFFF) fund, to help measure and quantify the value of ecosystem services provided by nature on our farms
- Piloting a voluntary biodiversity credit scheme, exploring pathways to make nature-based markets accessible to a range of New Zealand farmers and landholders
