LIFT Programme

What is LIFT

The LIFT Programme is a five-year, Primary Sector Growth Fund co-invested initiative led by Pāmu Landcorp Farming Limited and industry partners to validate and scale farm system change enabled by wearable and virtual fencing technologies in sheep and beef systems.

What will LIFT farmers actually do

The farmer continues to run their farm as a normal commercial operation. They use the LIFT‑supported technology, are open to adjusting parts of their system, and share agreed data so outcomes can be analysed. There is also an expectation that they host one on‑farm field day each year to share insights with other farmers. Time commitment varies by farm, but the programme aims to work around farming realities.

How were LIFT farms selected

LIFT funding partners identified a long list of potential demo farms across New Zealand through their networks. A panel was appointed to use fixed selection criteria to identify nine farms that represent a broad range of farming systems and scales. The nine farms are spread across New Zealand, representing all major farming regions.

How are you looking after the environment

LIFT is about assessing how farmers and the environment can benefit from wearables/virtual fencing. The programme helps farmers manage land and stock better, reduce waste, and protect soils and water, while keeping farms productive.

How are you looking after animal welfare

Animal welfare is non‑negotiable in LIFT. Farmers must meet NZ welfare standards, animals are monitored as part of normal farm practice, and there are clear steps in place if something isn’t right. Halter follows a set of standards and safeguards to ensure that animal welfare is protected when training, containing and guiding animals with virtual fencing technology.

Integrating virtual fencing enabled, rotational grazing systems in hill country sheep and beef farms has the potential to add $536 million per year in farm‑gate returns and an export value uplift of $1.25 billion by 2036
