For Nick Visagie, a Hawke's Bay Forester at Pāmu, excellence isn't measured in quarterly reports or immediate results—it's a legacy that takes decades to reveal itself. 

"I want to look back at my forests in 20 years and know that I can show my hard work to anyone and have a sense of pride," Nick explains. It's this long-term perspective that defines his approach to forestry, where decisions made today will shape the landscape for generations to come. 

Nick's journey to Pāmu began with a pivotal choice. While working at a forest management company focused primarily on exotic pine forests—New Zealand's forestry mainstay—he discovered an opportunity that aligned more closely with his values. The chance to combine industry-standard forestry practices with holistic land management approach of Pāmu proved irresistible. 

His role is anything but monotonous. One day finds him coordinating silviculture crews and inspecting stands across Hawke's Bay; the next sees him immersed in spreadsheets, GIS maps, and operational planning. This constant variety keeps Nick engaged and challenged. 

But the real reward comes from something simpler and perhaps more profound. Nick finds motivation in nature itself. Whether it's catching a beautiful sunrise or spending substantial time outdoors, these moments fuel his passion for the work.

One of his most memorable experiences captures this perfectly: driving around with Farm Managers, engaged in genuine conversation about the symbiotic relationship between farming and forestry. These moments illuminate how different aspects of land management complement and strengthen each other. 

Nick's top three professional loves tell the story of someone who has found his calling: being outdoors, working with and engaging farm teams, and making forests look good. It's a combination that speaks to both the practical and aesthetic dimensions of forestry work. 

The challenge of staying ahead, planning and scheduling to keep operations running smoothly and avoid unexpected surprises is what Nick identifies as the most crucial aspect of his role. It requires constant vigilance and forward thinking, but that's precisely what keeps the work engaging. 

Looking five years into the future, Nick envisions himself as an integral part of national forestry team of Pāmu, leading innovation and adding value through work with alternative species. With strong support from his manager, who consistently acknowledges success and encourages ambitious thinking, Nick's trajectory points toward exactly that kind of impact. 

For now, though, his focus remains on the forests under his care in Hawke's Bay, making decisions today that will create beauty and value decades from now, one carefully planned operation at a time.
